Tips for the Month:

  • Don’t continue to inspect colonies unless you have a reason to do so

  • Ensure all colonies have a laying queen, if not unite queenless colonies with another queened colony (ensure they are disease free before uniting)

  • Ensure colonies have enough stores for winter by the end of September - either a full super(20 -25 lbs) and at least 4 brood frames(20lbs) that is a total of 40- 45 lbs (18 to 20 Kg) - calculate a full brood frame at 5lbs or 2.2Kg - so 8 brood frames if you are not overwintering with a super.  If colonies have less than this, feed with sugar syrup until these levels are reached.

  • Heft or weigh hives.  They should feel almost nailed to the ground at this point.

  • Once bees have been fed, do varroa treatments before temperatures drop.

  • Reduce entrances and put up wasp deterrents or traps to prevent wasps invading hives.

  • Ensure your hives are bee-tight with no small holes are gaps that wasps or robber bees can penetrate

  • Toward the end of September, put in mouse guards
